What I’m Doing Now
- We’re now fully vaccinated. So it looks like there is light at the end of the tunnel. My steel band, Rhythm is Life, has been holding its weekly rehearsals outdoors, with all participants masked and spaced 6′ apart. RIL has been recording videos of our songs using multiple camera angles. Many of these are now being assembled into a virtual concert that will be shown on Thursday, May 27.
Desert City Jazz and Desert Overture will be starting up again in July, with all participants required to be fully vaccinated. I will probably join one or both of my community college jazz ensembles in the fall.
We just took a 4-day trip to Los Angeles and Temecula, and we’ve scheduled a cruise in Greece for later in the year. We’ve rescheduled a bus tour of France for Fall, 2022. It’s nice to travel again, although most places still require masks and not everything is fully open yet.
- Updating music playlists. I’ve spent a lot of time over the past few months adding more of my music to our jukebox computer and creating playlists. There’s always more to do, but I’m taking a brief break from that. Since pool season is almost here, I’m sure I’ll create some more playlists for that.
- Writing. I have been hard at work on my first novel, tentatively titled P.K. (The Preacher’s Kid). Now that the Chandler library is open again, I schedule two hours every day for writing and I sometimes do more at home. The writing is flowing out; thankfully, I am not have any problems with writer’s block. My first draft is 75-80% completed. I have no plans to write another retirement lifestyle book but I am still writing articles for RetireFabulously.com.
What I’m Reading Now
I just finished re-reading Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City series. I read the first six books in this series a long time ago (when there were only six), but I have forgotten most of it and it is almost new to me now. I decided to read the series again in order to learn what I can from his writing style.
Now, I am reading Bill Konigsberg’s The Bridge.
What I’m Listening to Now
I usually do most of my music listening in my car, but now that I am driving so little, I don’t have the opportunity to listen much. But I am enjoying rediscovering some of the old music on my vinyl records as I rip them.
